The South Summer School on Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM SSS) was established in 2026 as an annual educational initiative of the Brazilian National Institute of Science and Technology for Information and Decision Systems (INCT-INSID). Its creation builds upon the experience developed by INCT-INSID through its graduate training activities and reflects the Institute’s long-term commitment to advancing education and research in Multi-Criteria Decision Making and Aiding (MCDM/A).

Since 2020, INCT-INSID has offered annually an advanced course on MCDM/A as part of its knowledge transfer mission. The course was designed to support the development, modernization, and continuous improvement of graduate-level courses in Multi-Criteria Decision Making, while promoting the dissemination of state-of-the-art methods among students, researchers, and academics. The course adopts a modular structure and is taught by professors from several universities who are members of INCT-INSID. Delivered entirely through synchronous online sessions, it combines conceptual foundations with case-based learning, enabling participants to apply advanced MCDM/A methods to real decision problems proposed by the students themselves. The curriculum covers the main topics in contemporary MCDM/A, including Introduction to MCDM/A, Multi-Attribute Value Theory (MAVT), Outranking Methods, Building Decision Models, Problem Structuring Methods, Multi-Attribute Utility Theory (MAUT), Multiobjective Linear Programming, Evolutionary Multiobjective Optimization, and Group Decision and Negotiation. More information about the INCT-INSID courses is available at here

This INCT-INSID course provided the educational foundation for the creation of the MCDM South Summer School, where participants can further develop their knowledge through face-to-face interaction, collaborative activities, and international networking.

INCT-INSID has also maintained a strong connection with the international MCDM community. In 2016, members of the Institute served as lecturers at the International MCDM Summer School, contributing to its scientific program and strengthening international academic collaboration. The MCDM South Summer School represents a natural evolution of this long-standing involvement, expanding educational opportunities in the Global South and promoting greater international integration of students and researchers from Latin America and other regions.

The MCDM SSS takes place at the end of the each year, with the Summer in the South Hemisphere, conceived to be held immediately before the INSID Meeting, creating a natural bridge between advanced training and scientific exchange. The participants of MCDM SSS are also encouraged to attend the conference, enabling them to complement the knowledge acquired during the Summer School with the latest scientific advances presented at the conference, interact with the broader MCDM community, and engage with leading scholars in the field. The MCDM South Summer School brings together graduate students, researchers, and practitioners from around the world for an intensive learning experience. Each edition builds upon the success of previous ones while introducing new themes, emerging research topics, innovative methodologies, and distinguished international lecturers. As the MCDM SSS continues to grow, future editions will further expand the scope of its program and reinforce its mission to foster scientific excellence, encourage international collaboration, and contribute to the continued advancement of the MCDM/A field.
